: In 1924 Tajikistan became an autonomous republic within the new Soviet republic of Uzbekistan, and in 1929 the country became a full-fledged Soviet republic. In the late 1980s, the openness of the Soviet regime of Mikhail S. Gorbachev stimulated a nationalist movement in Tajikistan, and Tajik leaders declared independence on September 9, 1991, when the dissolution of the Soviet Union became obvious.
